If he wants to build things, the German company Fischer Technik makes building kits which last forever. Both in the not falling apart sense and the expandable to match experience sense. One NY source is studica.com. They sell kits for 5 year olds to university/trade school.
The Radio Shack electronics kits not what they used to be. But, still interesting.
If he can or wants to program parallax makes some micro controller kits also available at Fry's. Another option with a large following and lots of kits is Arduino Other interesting things are available at:
Adam has a couple of marble tracks (um, 4)and they are pretty much all he plays with. We have one that is compatible with our legos, so that's cool. Money well spent.
